Pieces of my last 2 weeks on camera: Debo Band x LoveCityLove x Octavia's Brood

On Friday I had the honor of opening up for my extended family, Debo Band at The Triple Door in Seattle. Scott Macklin was there to film some of the magic. Before the show started I said "it's not a Debo Band show if Bruck doesn't jump off the stage at some point and start dancing with people" before the show was over he did just sat, standing up and singing from the top of a table in the process. It's in the video. I love this group. I also got to go up to Vancouver over the weekend with them and sat in during their set at the Folk Festival, where we ran into another one of my favorite groups anywhere, Nomadic Massive! with special guest, our sister Sarah MK. Beautiful weekend.

Also here in Seattle, on Wednesdays there has been some unfiltered, unplugged improvised magic happening every week at LoveCityLove. Viliv Studios caught some of that magic along with conversations about what's happening in the city right now, featuring some of the Town's finest. (Sidenote: I was quoting Royal Alley-Barnes from Langston Hughes in the video.)

The Indiegogo campaign to publish Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories From Social Justice Movements has been going great! We have 15 days left to reach all the stretch goals. My sister Walidah Imarisha and myself went to a park in Seattle that may be named in Octavia Butler's honor, just to envision that possibility, as a part of an ongoing video series her and Adrienne are doing with all the Octavia's Brood writers. Check all those videos out in the indiegogo gallery!

JusMoni x WD4D (pictures)

Earlier today I got to sit in on a beautiful recording session with my homies JusMoni & WD4D. I took some cool photos, and even cooler video! I got this camera recently and I'm officially off the instagram... so I'll be posting photos here and on Flickr from time to time.

Slingshot Hip Hop: DAM in Seattle

4/22 - 4/23 :: DAM & Slingshot Hip Hop @ University of Washington!!!

Don’t miss the pioneering Palestinian Hip Hop group DAM’s first appearance in Seattle, WA - EVER!!!

DAM (Da Arabian MC’s or “forever” in Arabic) have been performing together since the late 90s. All three members of the group were born and grew up in the slums of Lod, a mixed town of Arabs and Jews, 20 km from Jerusalem. DAM’s music is a unique fusion of East and West, combining Arabic percussion rhythms, Middle Eastern melodies and urban Hip Hop/Rap. The lyrics of DAM are influenced by the continuing Israeli - Palestinian conflict as well as by the Palestinian struggle for freedom and equality. DAM also draw their influence from such controversial issues as terrorism, drugs and womens rights.

The following night, Thursday April 24th... there will be a screening of Slingshot Hip Hop at the UW Ethnic Theater with DAM alongside director Jackie Reem Salloum on hand to answer questions. If you remember the Premier of Slingshot Hip Hop in Seattle a few months back, there was a line around the block and tons of people couldn't get in. So be there early this time and remember doors open at 6:45 pm. $10 tickets / $6 with UW student i.d. If you don't remember, weren't there, never even been to Seattle, or just have no idea what i'm talking about, here's a video to fill you in. The night was life-changing. Sabreena da Witch and Mohammed Al-Farra of PR came last time and they made me beatbox for hours. i love them for it. Don't miss the next show!

"Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and inside Israel as they discover Hip Hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them." - SlingshotHipHop.com

The video above was just the afterparty of Slingshot Hip Hop's debut screening in Seattle, WA. The films premier screenings in Seattle & Olympia had the director, Jackie Reem Salloum on hand to answer questions, as well as artists from the film - Sabreena da Witch and Mohammed Al-Farra of PR... and i had the honor of performing alongside these incredible emcees in both citys! All i can say is... wow. Palestinian Hip Hop is DOPE... Slingshot Hip Hop might be one of the most important films on Hip Hop i've ever seen... and it's been so life-affirming to get to know these artists, and really see how powerful a tool for liberation this music can be... all across the world. Both lineups were off the hook... the Olympia show also featured SKIM, Mark Gonzalez and Canary Sing... and in Seattle the show also featured 1st Quarter Storm, Language Arts, DJ WD4D, Canary Sing and some group called Abyssinian Creole... hosting, laptop dj'ing, working the sound, and beatboxing all night.... whew! if you get a chance tho... go see that film!!! we'll be bringing it back soon...

and yo!!! check what Seattle Weekly had to say about it too... Reverb - Last Night: Slingshot Hip-Hop at the Hidmo

GT's celebrating 28 years of life, 2 years of Hidmo, & 10 years of doing shows in the Northwest! WHAT!!!

Mystic, from Oakland California currently residing in Los Angeles, released her debut album, Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom, in the summer of 2001 to critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base. She has toured with Digital Underground, Slum Village, Black Eyed Peas, Phife and Jarobi (Tribe Called Quest) as well as co-headlining a MTV2 tour with India Irie, which also included Heather B, Kelis, Goapele and others called The Women of Hip Hop and Soul Tour. Fans and the unknowing alike were exited and impressed with her personal shows, either with a DJ or with a live band. Through the support of many Mystic was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Song Collaboration for the song 'W' featuring Planet Asia; as well as for Best Female Hip Hop artist at the 2002 BET Awards.

In the process of working her album, JCOR, the distributing label, folded and Mystic along with Goodvibe Recordings signed a new deal to re-release the album with Dreamworks Records. With everything in gear, including a first video shot, Dreamworks was bought by Universal Music which led to Mystic asking to be released from her contract. Though that music may never be heard, Mystic has spent the past few years putting together the new album, entitled "Beautiful Resistance". Working with The Beatminerz, Eligh (of Living Legends), Zinn, Adamatic, Sample 208, and Buccweet; Mystic has once again put together an album full of love, pain, struggle, hope, fear and honesty for the next chapter. She is an urban dream with a voice that tells no lies. Having taken the time to attend school, live life and make the album she wanted; Mystic is piece by piece, show by show venturing back out and re-opening the amazing dialogue she has always had with her fans. For those who know…welcome back; for those who don't…welcome to a new day.

West Coast Performer Magazine: Show Of The Month (August ’08)

this is in the August issue of West Coast Performer... check it out! http://performermag.com/wcp.livereviews.0808.php

SHOW OF THE MONTH

Noise For The Needy Festival
Talib Kweli / Common Market / Gabriel Teodros / Grayskul
Showbox at the Market | Seattle, WA | June 15, 2008

The final night of the 2008 Noise for the Needy Festival saw a stacked bill of Seattle hip-hop, capped off with a set from Brooklyn's own Talib Kweli. Grayskul began the evening authoritatively, wielding an impressive range from quick, synth-driven tracks to others that traversed moodier, more contemplative territory. Without the props and unnecessary theatrics of some of their previous shows (snowy TV sets onstage, a rock-oriented live bassist, etc.), the group could play to their strengths, emphasizing the dynamic, complimentary styles of MCs JFK and Onry Ozzborn.

Up next was Gabriel Teodros, whose well-constructed set served to ramp up the energy level in the room considerably. He started off with a couple of relatively laidback songs and quickly invited a tap dancer onstage. This experiment, though admirable for its spontaneous feel, ended up being most effective whenever the DJ dropped out. With the busy footwork as additional accompaniment, any slight deviations from the pocket were somewhat jarring against the ironclad consistency of the turntables. Soon after, Teodros' set enjoyed a major boost from fellow Abyssinian Creole member Khingz, who seemed to feed off of the enthusiastic crowd. Teodros then rode the wave of momentum and passionately asserted his cultural identity with a cluster of songs focusing more overtly on social commentary. From there, his sense of conviction and celebratory mood carried it through to the end.

Rounding out the local contingent, Common Market's Sabzi and RA Scion were welcomed with a tremendous response. The duo came out swinging, ripping through single verses from a barrage of newer songs in the early going. Having just released the Black Patch War EP, and with the full length Tobacco Road being prepped for a September 9 release, there was plenty of fresh material to draw from. EP highlight "Trouble Is" worked particularly well in the live setting with its furiously paced double-time sections and Sabzi's startlingly convincing backup vocals. Guests included 2007 American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis and Geologic from Blue Scholars.

After a full three-course meal of hip-hop, headliner Talib Kweli faced the challenge of taking the stage after midnight on a Sunday evening. The audience proved resilient, however, and the Brooklyn-born MC was able to keep things moving even into the wee hours. His set mainly focused on the more accessible material from his latest effort, Eardrum, while occasional selections from the Reflection Eternal album, Train of Thought, provided a welcome contrast.
