Food & Sh*t presents "Hidmo Back!"

This last weekend Food & Sh*t and Hidmo hosted a night called "Hidmo Back!" on Beacon Hill in Seattle. A bunch of us performed: DJ Daps1, Hollis, Rogue Pinay, si dåko’ta, Daniel Pak (of Kore Ionz), Prometheus Brown and Otieno Terry (who's incredible album with Hightek Lowlives is rumored to be dropping like next week?!) If you missed it, check this video Scott Macklin made above. I did one of the lost tracks (there's at least 7 lost tracks) from the upcoming Children Of The Dragon album titled "The World Is A Hidmo". Shoutout to Thione Diop and everyone holding it down at Jaam Rek on 20th & Jackson now. My song is out of date since the old Hidmo building is far from empty... it's not in the video but I said that at the event too.

If you have no idea what Hidmo is (or was) check these archives, the quickest summary I can offer is something I wrote on the day we closed it titled Honoring an era.

live performances, videos and languages...

So I've been digging through the vaults and putting a few live performance pieces up on YouTube. The above video is a performance of "Colored People's Time Machine" on The Seattle Channel's Art Zone, sometime last year. The video is closed captioned and you can read the subtitles in Spanish and English now!

Speaking of subtitles... if anyone wants to volunteer to translate lyrics let me know! We've got "Third World Wide" available in Spanish, French and Italian and have been adding languages to "Mind Power" as well. I'm so excited to have my lyrics accessible to more people and so grateful to everyone that's helped make it happen over the last few months. People power makes dreams come true!

The video below is from a classic show at The Triple Door with my group Air 2 A Bird, recorded in the summer of 2010.  An all acoustic set with grand piano, percussion and 4 vocalists. Enjoy!

Live CopperWire on The Underground Railroad!

This CopperWire Tour has been amazing!  From rocking with legends like Black Stax in the Northwest, to Tamar-kali in NYC, and an incredible Welcome to Detroit with Invincible, Mike-E and DJ Invisible... the connections made this last week, and the experiences shared are something that will last a lifetime. Really excited to rock Los Angeles tonight and San Francisco this week. We're so thankful to everyone we met along the way, and every person that held us and supported us along the way. It's been great landing on Planet Earth, for real. One of the highlights from the road was a stop we made in NYC at WBAI, for an interview and performance with the one and only Jay Smooth (who happens to run one of my favorite blogs at illdoctrine.com) on New York's longest running Hip Hop radio show, The Underground Railroad. There's a short video clip posted above... and the entire interview posted below. Get to know our spaceship!

Air 2 A Bird "LIVE @ The Triple Door"

Air 2 A Bird: LIVE @ The Triple Door

Thanks to our friend Andria Millie (who co-directed our video for "Let's Ride" last year) we were able to find the only copy of our recording from last summer's concert we did with Meklit Hadero at The Triple Door. If you didn't catch Air 2 A Bird in 2010... you missed a whole era of 3 part harmonies, pianos, percussion, theater and hip hop... all over Seattle. This is just a taste of what that was like... with Lara Davis and Estrella de Leon on vocals, Ivan Galvez on percussion, Amos Miller on piano and me & Amos together on the raps. Some crazy unplugged acoustic hip hop soul... download it off our bandcamp now!

Hidmo's Goodbye Jackson Street Party :: VIDEO

So if you haven't heard the news by now, Hidmo closed it's doors on 20th & Jackson last week. Before moving the ENTIRE restaurant in one day (and i mean everything... including several kitchen sinks) we celebrated 4 years and one month of life at Hidmo on Monday night. A classic celebration i hosted with DJ's OC Notes & Seabefore on the wheels, that at one point turned into an Eritrean dance party. It was the winter solstice (a.k.a. longest night of the year) and a lunar eclipse at the same time... which only happens every 450 years or so. Believe it or not, this video only captures a lil bit of the magic of that night (a huge statement coming from me, as this video gives me hella goosebumps... it was just so epic.) Peace to Scott Macklin for the documentation (...for years now) and everybody that came through that night, ESPECIALLY everyone who helped move the next day... and to all the lovely people in this video: Rahwa Habte, JusMoni, Felicia Loud, Dakota Kamacho, Storme Webber, Suntonio Bandanaz & Julie C., THEESatisfaction, Alberto Mejia, Luzviminda Uzuri Carpenter, Arielle Davis, Mark Gonzales... and really thanks to everyone that helped make Hidmo what it is. More information about Hidmo NEXT is at http://www.hidmo.org

PS: If anyone has photos of ALL of us outside during the eclipse... e-mail me. I'm trying to see those!

from mayors events to shabazz palaces...

So... it's been a crazy couple of weeks. After moving into my new spot in Bushwick, Brooklyn, i go to spend New Years Eve with my fam in New Addis (a.k.a. Wahington, DC)... That morning i get an invite to perform at newly-elected Mayor Mike McGinn's inauguration party in Seattle. A free, all-ages event open to all, held at Showbox SoDo on Saturday night. My first response was "huh?... did they even listen to my music?" and then i got really skeptical as to why i was invited... But i've heard some cool things about Mike McGinn, and it felt like an important event to do... if not for me, for the communities i represent and the issues i talk about in my music... issues i feel like don't get addressed in a real way in the sphere of local politics... but to be honest it's a world i've never interacted with in my life. I, like a lot of people from my part of Seattle, grew up honestly feeling like our city is trying to kill us. So you can imagine my dilemna in being invited to perform at a Mayor's event. I kind of started looking at this invite as a grow-up pill... Like our music has an influence on people, we can affect local politics. But don't just be a tool. So I spent the morning calling on a lot of people who i trust, just to hear different perspectives in regards to this event... i have to say, my community is tight!!! And i was reminded of this piece of wisdom i got from a MAG-Net conference i recently attended in D.C... In community organizing, and in building a campaign, there are 2 things that can never change. Your values, your foundation, what you stand on, has to always remain in tact. And your goal, what your fighting for, it can not change... don't settle for less then what you set out to get. Everything, every tactic you use in between those 2... can, and probably will change. This just felt like one of those moments. I'm not co-signing on any elected official. But i will say i actually had an honest conversation with Mike McGinn... and he seemed like a really genuine dude. I hope the conversations continue... I chose not to engage in politics for so long, and even though i still feel like the system is inherently flawed... we still should have our voices heard and be present in every arena where decisions are made that affect our lives and the lives of our children. That was my first step. End speech. This was also the first venue where i played one of my new favorite songs, Mothershippin'!!

But the real highlight of my little 3-day trip home? Seeing cousins, and meeting Moni's baby. After that tho? Shabazz Palaces!!! You know how that was one of the dopest projects to drop last year right? And in the timeline of Seattle Hip Hop i would say it already made history. Well... the show was even better! Ish rhyming while playing the beats live, Tendai rocking the drums, mbira and vocals... the stage set... dancers... routines... Geechi Suede of Camp Lo coming out of nowhere to spit a few verses... Home. The town represented. "Was you there tonight?" I got my name shouted out in the first 5 minutes lol... Thanks homies. Now we all have to go harder. I love it. See ya'll next week. Oh, and check this review from The Stranger.

And if your in New York City, see me tomorrow at Noon at Judson Memorial Church, or on the 30th at Le Poisson Rouge. If your in Boston, see me Friday, i'm sitting in with The Debo Band! And Seattle, we got a dope show for you January 22nd at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. yee!

THE REVIVAL: A Tour Documentary with Roxanne Shante, Bahamadia + more!

This is the homie Invincible's directorial debut, of what i would most definitely call a legendary tour. I'm super inspired by this... Pay attention. Invincible describes it better than i could on her website...

The Revival (Europe, 2009, 17 min)
Directed by Invincible. Produced by EMERGENCE Media and Iqaa the Olivetone.

The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It also shows the exchange of lessons between them and up-and-coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps, and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed and directed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women in independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters.

In support of the release of The Revival, The Fembassy is featuring weekly interviews with the artists from The Revival.

Video - LIVE @ HIDMO featuring ORBITRON with Yze, Circle of Fire/Soulshifters & DJ Gumbeaux

If you missed Live @ Hidmo this last Friday i feel bad for you. I've never seen such a high percentage of people at a Hip Hop show with genuine smiles on their faces. One cause the music was so dope... Orbitron, Yze, Mozest, Free and DJ Gumbeaux all went so hard! but mostly cause the crowd was comprised of so many youth... some still with pacifiers... up front dancing the whole night. This Friday (8/7) is sure to be another classic night... as J. Pinder will be rocking it with brand new material off his Sky Is Falling EP! Peace to Derek Edamura, Case and Scott Macklin for the footage!
